lolita is an alternative jfashion that takes inspiration from rococo & victorian wear. i first discovered lolita in 2012 but only began wearing it myself in 2024. i'd describe my lolita-fashion-style as "anime girl desktop wallpaper you downloaded on your lenovo thinkpad in 2006." in lolita-substyle terms i wear oldschool sweet & classic primarily--depending on your interpretation of oldschool, as many of my pieces are not actually from the 90s and early 2000s due to average market prices of those items since they're effectively vintage & coveted (although for good reason). in that case i suppose you would call my style traditional sweet & classic. although i have the odd gothic piece in my wardrobe too. in general though, i typically follow older styling rules when it comes to lolita and don't really care about top to bottom cohesion.
my favorite brand is baby, the stars shine bright, although i like a lot of indie like kazuko ogawa, milky ange, cornet, etc.. my favorite chinese brand is probably either kuno:noku or rose and neverland.
hopefully i will post some coords here at sm pt but i keep getting scared lol. one day...maybe...
a huge barrier for getting into lolita for me was my gender identity & expression as a nonbinary transmasc person. in 2024 i got back into malice mizer & moi dix mois and were it not for mana's driving force behind the visual elements of those brands and putting himself out there as a cis guy who runs a lolita brand and generally presents very feminine i don't know if i could have talked myself into trying to make the plunge and dabble in the fashion. this is the mana picture that really made me sit down and think 'ok, i want to look like this and still be he/him-ed too.' he is now here to oversee this page and offer his aristocratic gothic vampire protection to any and all lolitas--aspiring or otherwise--who visit this page ♡.
thank you, mana...!!!

here are some of my favorite coords from old school snaps for your perusal!
additional lolita pages.
if you have wanted to get into lolita and don't know how or where or are daunted by the cost of things, i've made a "how to lolita" page that i hope will be of some use. bear in mind this is purely anecdotal from my perspective and i wrote it around the time i was gathering resources and information on actually wearing the fashion. please don't take it as gospel and be prepared to do your own research. regardless, i hope it is helpful.
i filled out the 100 lolita questions questionnaire!

other lolita resources/links:
- lolitahistory - great for scans of old catalogs, jfashion magazines, etc.. a source you can't go without if you are interested in the fashion!
- lolibrary - an online database of lolita items over the years. great for starting out but there's a lot they're missing too. regardless, really helpful source!
- rainedragon's 'identifying mystery items' tutorial - for those who are curious about when an item might have been made
- how to become an angel's 'lolita tag guide' - another tag guide
- ophanimkei's lolita shopping guide
- the cult of usakumya webring - a webring for lolita wearers! all substyle-inclusive.
- old school lolita coords flickr album - maintained by angelbruises who runs cynical neo princessism. she also has a 90s jfashion flickr album and an oldschool lolita item scans album.
zines/modern scans/etc.
- heavenly creatures zine - this is a google drive link (better than linking to a dead instagram though imo). a one-off zine that was made in 2020 as a 'love letter to the worldwide lolita community' in the wake of COVID. i especially like the room snapshots!
- allyratworld's new zealand EGL community zines - allyratworld has made some zines documenting the new zealand lolita fashion community's exploits over the past few years (2022-2024) and they are all available for free download via pdf (or you can buy physical copies). they are super fun to look at, have some lovely coords, and as us j-fashion fans know it's nice to have a physical documentation of the fashion somewhere, almost like a continuation of FRUiTS and GLBs with that modern new zealand flair!
- rococo beat (instagram link) - a jfashion & music oriented magazine. kind of tailormade for me and my interests tbh! there are currently 2 issues available, with one on pre-order for april 2026.
